Avid Launches 6.0 Avid|DS Family

Written By George Avgerakis

Editors wedded to Media Composer, and others seeking a no-compromises path to high definition will be pleased with Avid's 6.0 upgrade for Avid|DS. Sporting 40 minutes of uncompressed HD capacity, the head of the family, Avid|DS HD, prices at $161,000, followed by the Avid|DS with four hours of SD storage at $115,000.

Avid's entry level Avid|DS Editor, at $85,000 allows newcomers to acquire new clients and quickly amortize their hardware. All three models are assisted by Avid|DS RP, a remote processing platform, retailing at $6,000.

Based on using off-the shelf computer hardware, like the Compaq W8000 with dual 2.2 GHz, Pentium IV processors, the new line features real time, multi-track SD editing and real time HD at ¼ resolution. Renders of full res HD effects are quite fast and may be executed on the RP unit, while working elsewhere on the timeline.

The system, supporting Advanced Authoring Format (AAF), offers significant advancements when conforming from other AAF compliant editors. Features include automatic up-resing of all graphics, such as Truetype fonts and paint effects, when conforming from SD offline to HD; real-time moving matte support, real-time DVE with Z-axis rotation and perspective; Support for 720/60p and all other HD formats; Media Composer styled bin features; re-link and playback support of uncompressed SD video sources from other Avid systems; and a 35% performance enhancement over Avid|DS 5.0 systems when using the latest CPUs.
